Update on Welfare Reform Bill (S.1806/H.3756)

An update from our partner, Crittenton Women’s Union:

“The welfare reform bill (S.1806/H.3756) is still in conference committee which we heard will now work out the final bill between now and some time in January.

If the bill had been rushed through, we are sure it would have included many harmful provisions.  We now have more of an opportunity to try to make the bill better. Several harmful provisions are the same or similar in the House and Senate versions of the bill, so it will be uphill to get them changed significantly.  We have a lot of work to do.

The calls and contacts you made to legislators certainly had an impact.  Without your calls and contacts, it is likely the House and Senate bills would have been even more similar and the conference bill would have been rushed through and the bill passed yesterday.”

We will be in touch about next steps soon.  Thank you again for your advocacy!
